Russia led the UN Security Council

Russia on October 1, becomes chairman of the UN Security Council. This month may complete the process of selecting the new UN secretary-general.

About 20 meetings

The first meeting of the Security Council will be held on Monday, October 3, when the program of work for the month will be agreed. The main topics that the Council will in October, will be conflicts in Africa, the situation in Sudan's Darfur, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mali, Central African Republic, South Sudan, and the Middle East problems: Syria, Lebanon, Yemen. Also on 25 October open debate format will consider the report of UN Secretary General on "Women, Peace and Security".

"The central event of the Russian chairmanship will debate 28 October United Nations cooperation with regional organizations: the Organization of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS)," - said the Russian diplomatic mission.


On October 5, the Security Council is scheduled to vote on the candidates for the post of UN Secretary General in the new format. On 21 July, Council members held five rounds of voting, the leader of which invariably left the former Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Guterres. This will show whether the candidate has the support of veto-wielding Britain, China, Russia, USA and France. Candidate for the post of secretary-general must be approved by a majority vote of the Security Council - 9 out of 15 and have no vote "against" by the five permanent members.

"The Council will continue, and perhaps complete, the process of developing recommendations for the General Assembly on the nomination of the new Secretary General of the United Nations", - said the Russian permanent mission to the UN.
